Nonspecific medication side effects and the nocebo phenomenon

Barsky AJ, Saintfort R, Rogers MP, Borus JF.

JAMA ยท 2002

In plain language

This classic review found that a large share of the side effects patients report from active medications are not explained by the drug's known pharmacology, and proposed the nocebo effect -- negative expectation -- as a major contributor. It's the paper that brought nocebo effects into mainstream clinical medicine's attention.
