Putting feelings into words: Affect labeling disrupts amygdala activity in response to affective stimuli

Lieberman MD et al.

Psychol Sci ยท 2007

In plain language

In an fMRI study, labeling the emotion shown in a negative image (choosing a word like 'angry') reduced amygdala activity compared with just viewing the image, and increased activity in a prefrontal region linked to cognitive control. This supports 'name it to tame it' as a real neural pattern in a lab task, not a clinical outcome trial.
