In plain language

In human cells and in the worm C. elegans, endogenous formaldehyde reacted directly with glutathione's active thiol group, disrupting the cell's redox balance and causing toxicity, an effect blocked by boosting glutathione synthesis and eased by thiol-rich antioxidants like N-acetylcysteine.
