In plain language
Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (TIV) versus saline in 115 Hong Kong children found no significant difference in influenza risk between groups, but found TIV recipients had a significantly increased risk of virologically confirmed non-influenza respiratory virus infection over the following 9 months (relative risk 4.40, 95 percent CI 1.31-14.8). The authors proposed a lack of temporary non-specific immune protection, that would otherwise come from natural influenza infection, as a possible mechanism, not a direct toxic harm from the vaccine itself.
